Kamala Beach
Kamala Beach lies on the west coast of Phuket just nine kilometres north of Patong. The beach was devastated in the 2004 tsunami but has since recovered and is as charming now as it was before. Kamala is an excellent destination if you like to spend most of your holiday relaxing and swimming on the beach. Its clear waters and village atmosphere make for an ideal retreat.
The southern end of Kamala Beach is a lovely strip of sand with shallow waters perfect for families with young children. The more peaceful northern end of the beach is a popular surfing spot in the low season when the waves are high. Although becoming increasingly more popular with tourists Kamala retains a laid back and mellow ambience.
For those who like to be a bit more active on holiday, there are plenty of opportunities for water sports; and long-tail boats and motor boats are available for hire to explore the surrounding bays and islands. On and around Kamala Beach there are several shops, quaint restaurants serving Thai and international cuisine and friendly bars to sip a cocktail while watching the beautiful sunsets.
The main attraction in Kamala (apart from the beach) is Phuket FantaSea – a cultural theme park with spectacular shows depicting Thailand’s rich and colourful history. The extravagant shows held in a high-tech auditorium feature elephants and breathtaking acrobats. The complex has a large themed buffet style restaurant offering cuisine from around the world. Surrounding the main stage show theatre are dozens of shops and entertaining side shows.
A short trip south of Kamala Beach to Patong will be bring you to entirely different nights entertainment – with dozens of bars, nightclubs and live music venues - it’s hard to get bored here.
