Mai Khao Beach

Mai Khao Beach is the longest beach on Phuket, stretching for a massive eleven kilometres. Known also as the Airport Beach or Sanambin Beach, it is situated at the north western end of the island, close to Phuket International Airport. The beach has remained relatively unspoilt with only a few established resorts constructed along the strip. Most of the beach is deserted and you can walk for quite a while without glimpsing another soul.

Mai Khao is part of the Sirinat National Park that covers over 90 square kilometres around the area and encompasses Nai Thon, Nai Yang and Sai Kaeo beaches. Mai Khao Beach was once well known as a nesting area for the endangered giant leather back turtle, but sadly due to development there are few to be found these days.

A short walk from the JW Marriot resort is the Turtle Village, a vast shopping area on two levels covering over 3000sqm, here you will find Thai souvenirs, gifts and opportunities for dining.

One of the main attractions around the area, especially for families with kids, is the Splash Jungle Water Park. The park offers thrilling rides, a six-level wave pool and a play pool for the younger children. For a more relaxing time there is also a 335 metre ‘lazy river’ that you can float around or you can try some hydrotherapy in their spring pool.

For a bit of culture the Mai Khao Temple (Wat Mai Khao), off the main road, is worth a visit. There is a small lake in a park behind the temple that has a bird sanctuary, but be forewarned the local abbot is a strict monk so appropriate attire and behavior are required.

A popular spot along the beach, if you’re prepared for the walk, is at the end of the airport runway where the low flying jets taking off and landing make for an impressive sight.
